Vacheron Constantin Traditionnelle Twin Beat: a perpetual calendar with a 70-day power reserve

Time to read: 9 min

Collectors of perpetual calendars know the dilemma all too well: wear them regularly or rely on a watch winder to keep them running and correctly set. Once the power reserve has been depleted, the movement stops and setting all the indications back to the correct date can become a lengthy and delicate process. Unsurprisingly, many enthusiasts use watch winders to keep their perpetual calendar timepieces running and avoid having to reset them every time they are worn. A practical solution, certainly, but one that does not address the problem at its root.

Vacheron Constantin Traditionnelle Twin Beat Perpetual Calendar

With the new Vacheron Constantin Traditionnelle Twin Beat Perpetual Calendar, the Geneva-based Maison aims to solve this issue once and for all, creating one of the most intelligent and innovative timepieces in contemporary haute horlogerie. Thanks to a patented dual-frequency system, the watch can remain unworn for more than two months while keeping all of its calendar indications running.

A result that not only improves practicality, but also gives new meaning to the word “perpetual”.

THE MEANING OF “PERPETUAL” ACCORDING TO VACHERON CONSTANTIN

The perpetual calendar is one of the noblest and most fascinating complications in mechanical watchmaking. Thanks to a sophisticated cam system, it is capable of following the Gregorian calendar, automatically recognising the different lengths of the months and leap years without requiring any correction until 2100.

There is, however, one condition: the movement must continue to receive energy.

It is precisely from this consideration that the Vacheron Constantin Traditionnelle Twin Beat Perpetual Calendar was born. First introduced in 2019 and awarded the Innovation Prize at the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève 2019, its mission is as simple as it is revolutionary: to allow a perpetual calendar to continue running even when the watch is not worn for weeks.

Rather than simply creating another perpetual calendar, Vacheron Constantin sought to rethink the very concept of this complication, making it far better suited to the habits of modern collectors, who often rotate several timepieces throughout the week.

THE TWIN BEAT SYSTEM: TWO FREQUENCIES FOR TWO WAYS OF WEARING A WATCH

After four years of research and development, Vacheron Constantin created the Twin Beat system, a mechanical solution unlike anything else in the world of haute horlogerie.

The Calibre 3610 QP is equipped with two independent gear trains powered by a double coaxial barrel connected in series. The first operates at a frequency of 5 Hz, or 36,000 vibrations per hour, and is used when the watch is being worn, ensuring outstanding timekeeping performance and a four-day power reserve.

The second works at a frequency of just 1.2 Hz, or 8,640 vibrations per hour, drastically reducing energy consumption and allowing the movement to achieve an impressive 70-day power reserve.

One of the most challenging tasks for the Maison’s engineers was determining the minimum frequency capable of delivering such an extraordinary autonomy without compromising precision. At 1.2 Hz, the Twin Beat system maintains a constant balance amplitude throughout the entire power reserve, an essential factor in preserving the movement’s accuracy.

Switching from one mode to the other is done via a pusher positioned at 8 o’clock. An indicator on the dial displays the selected frequency and the change is instantaneous, without any interruption in the transmission of energy. As a result, the time and all calendar indications continue to run seamlessly.

CALIBRE 3610 QP: 480 COMPONENTS AND FIVE EXTRA DAYS OF AUTONOMY

Entirely developed and manufactured by Vacheron Constantin, the Calibre 3610 QP is a manually wound movement of remarkable complexity.

Measuring just 32 mm in diameter and 6 mm thick, it nonetheless contains 480 components64 jewels, two regulating organs, a double barrel and three differentials dedicated to energy management and the transition between the two frequencies.

The first differential ensures the continuity of the hour and minute display when switching from one gear train to the other. The second manages the distribution of energy to the 1.2 Hz gear train, while the third controls the display of the two power reserves through a single dual-scale indicator positioned at 12 o’clock.

Compared with the 2019 model, this new version gains an additional five days of autonomy in standby mode, increasing from 65 to 70 days. The improvement comes from a newly patented double-gear spring charging system developed for the instantaneous perpetual calendar.

This mechanism requires four times less torque than conventional instantaneous jumping systems, making the date change significantly less energy-intensive and contributing decisively to the increase in power reserve.

The entire movement is also certified with the prestigious Hallmark of Geneva, one of the most prestigious certifications in Swiss watchmaking.

AN OPENWORKED DIAL THAT SHOWCASES THE MECHANICS

The new Vacheron Constantin Traditionnelle Twin Beat Perpetual Calendar retains all the stylistic codes of the Traditionnelle collection while interpreting them through a decidedly contemporary language.

The dial is built on two levels. The lower section, made of sapphire, reveals the movement’s mainplate, which is sandblasted and treated with a NAC coating. Above it sits an 18-carat gold plate finished in slate grey and decorated with a hand-guilloché radiating pattern.

The engraved and painted railway minute track is complemented by redesigned power reserve, day and month displays, protected by laser-engraved sapphire discs that give them a satin appearance and improve legibility.

The arrangement of the indications also contributes to the watch’s highly technical character. At 12 o’clock is the dual-scale power reserve indicator, which displays the remaining autonomy in both operating modes. At 9 o’clock, a dedicated hand indicates the selected frequency mode, allowing the wearer to see immediately whether the calibre is operating at 5 Hz or 1.2 Hz.

The perpetual calendar indications are distributed in an exceptionally balanced manner. In the lower part of the dial are the counters dedicated to the day and month, while a discreet aperture at 6 o’clock indicates the leap year cycle, helping to maintain excellent legibility despite the watch’s considerable mechanical complexity.

The hours and minutes are displayed by 18-carat white gold Dauphine hands, complemented by applied white gold baton markers. The power reserve and frequency mode hands are crafted in 18-carat yellow gold with black PVD treatment, while the date and month hands are sandblasted and rhodium-plated.

The result is an openworked dial that showcases the movement’s complexity without sacrificing the elegance and balance that define Vacheron Constantin.

A PLATINUM CASE AND HAUTE HORLOGERIE FINISHING

The 950 platinum case measures 42 mm in diameter and just 12.3 mm thick, an impressive achievement considering the complexity of the movement and the presence of two independent gear trains.

The slim bezel, rounded case middle and fluted caseback reflect the traditional codes of the Traditionnelle collection, while the sapphire crystal caseback allows the movement’s finishing to be fully appreciated.

The bridges are hand-bevelled and decorated with Côtes de Genève, the mainplate is sandblasted and the large barrel cover features a circular satin finish. On the reverse side, the NAC treatment creates a striking contrast between the anthracite grey fixed parts and the golden tones of the moving components, echoing the two-tone aesthetic of the dial.

The watch is water resistant to 3 bar, or approximately 30 metres, and is completed by a black technical calfskin strap with a textured finish, a hand-stitched calfskin lining with red stitching and folded edges, secured by a 950 platinum pin buckle.

AVAILABILITY, PRICE AND FINAL THOUGHTS

In an industry where innovation often comes in the form of new materials or minor aesthetic updates, the Vacheron Constantin Traditionnelle Twin Beat Perpetual Calendar proves that there is still room for ideas capable of genuinely improving the experience of wearing a grand complication.

With its 70-day power reserve, sophisticated Calibre 3610 QPTwin Beat system and unique approach to the concept of the perpetual calendar, this creation from the Geneva Maison is not only an extraordinary demonstration of mechanical savoir-faire, but also one of the most thoughtful and innovative interpretations of the perpetual calendar to emerge in recent years.

The new Vacheron Constantin Traditionnelle Twin Beat Perpetual Calendar, reference 3200T/000P-H167, is offered in 950 platinum and priced at CHF 282,000, a figure that reflects the technical complexity and uniqueness of one of the most fascinating creations produced by Vacheron Constantin in recent years.
