RICHARD MILLE RM 64-01 TOURBILLON COLNAGO: WHEN HAUTE HORLOGERIE MEETS AN ITALIAN CYCLING LEGEND

Time to read: 11 min

What could a racing bicycle frame possibly have in common with a tourbillon? At first glance, nothing. Yet Richard Mille and Colnago have built their histories around the very same principles: reducing weight, increasing rigidity and refining every single component by eliminating anything that does not directly contribute to performance.

Long before collaborating, the two brands already shared the same engineering philosophy.

That shared vision is what gave birth to the new Richard Mille RM 64-01 Tourbillon Colnago, a limited edition of just 50 pieces that brings more than seventy years of Italian cycling expertise into the world of Haute Horlogerie. Not through a simple styling exercise, but by translating Colnago’s engineering language into a movement, a case and an aesthetic conceived as a single, coherent project.

That is precisely what makes this collaboration so compelling. Rather than creating a watch that merely resembles a bicycle, Richard Mille set out to design a timepiece according to the very same principles that have guided Colnago in the development of its legendary bicycle frames for decades.

WHY RICHARD MILLE CHOSE COLNAGO

To understand this partnership, one must travel back to Cambiago, just outside Milan. When Ernesto Colnago opened his workshop in 1954, his ambition was never simply to build better bicycles, but to continually rethink how they should be engineered. Over the decades that followed, the Italian manufacturer became one of the defining names in professional cycling, pioneering new frame geometries, experimenting with increasingly advanced materials and playing a decisive role in the evolution of the modern racing bicycle.

From steel to composite materials, every innovation stemmed from the same fundamental question: how can performance, rigidity and efficiency be improved while simultaneously reducing weight?

It is the very same question Richard Mille asks whenever it develops a new movement. More than the global reputation of the two brands, it is this shared engineering mindset that makes the collaboration feel so natural. For both companies, materials are never mere aesthetic choices; they are the foundation upon which the entire project is built.

WHEN A MOVEMENT IS DESIGNED LIKE A BICYCLE FRAME

It is by taking a closer look at the Richard Mille RM 64-01 Tourbillon Colnago that this philosophy truly comes into focus. For Richard Mille, the movement is what the frame is to Colnago: the element around which everything else is conceived.

The new RM64-01 calibre was developed around three guiding principles — lightness, transparency and volume — resulting in a fully skeletonised architecture that reveals every component with remarkable clarity. Viewed from the front, the movement almost resembles the silhouette of a racing bicycle frame, thanks to the balance between solid structures and open spaces rather than any literal stylistic reference.

The same impression emerges from the layout of the movement itself. Positioned at 1 o’clock, the barrel sits in perfect symmetry with the tourbillon at 7 o’clock, a configuration that immediately evokes the geometry of a bicycle drivetrain. It is an understated yet highly effective solution, allowing the connection with Colnago’s world to emerge naturally, without ever feeling forced.

The same philosophy extends to the movement’s upper bridges. Crafted from Grade 5 titanium, they feature a distinctive star-shaped geometry inspired by the iconic Colnago Master frames developed during the 1980s to increase torsional rigidity without adding unnecessary weight. They are then hand-lacquered in whiteazure blue and 5N red gold, a colour palette borrowed directly from the Colnago C68, while microblasted titanium details complete an ensemble that successfully captures the identity of the Italian manufacturer without resorting to superficial decorative references.

This is perhaps the greatest achievement of the new RM 64-01 Tourbillon Colnago. Rather than simply dedicating a watch to Colnago, Richard Mille has reinterpreted the Italian brand’s engineering philosophy, transforming it into a contemporary mechanical movement.

And it is by examining the calibre, the case and the materials more closely that this philosophy fully comes to life.

WHEN MATERIALS BECOME PART OF THE ENGINEERING

If the movement represents the heart of the new Richard Mille RM 64-01 Tourbillon Colnago, the case perfectly illustrates how the Maison interprets the concept of performance. Here again, every material has been selected with performance in mind rather than aesthetics alone, much like in the development of a high-performance racing bicycle.

Measuring 43.21 × 49.94 mm with a thickness of 14.23 mm, the case combines White Quartz TPT, Blue Quartz TPT inserts and a 5N red gold flange. It is a construction that perfectly reflects Richard Mille’s philosophy, where every component is selected for its mechanical properties before its visual appeal.

This reference also introduces a new shade of Blue Quartz TPT, developed exclusively for the project and inspired by the colours of the Colnago C68. The result is a distinctive colour identity that immediately reinforces the connection between the watch and the Italian bicycle manufacturer without ever becoming excessive.

The same attention to detail can be seen in the crown, crafted from Quartz TPT and fitted with a 5N red gold cap bearing Colnago’s iconic Ace of Clubs emblem. It is a subtle yet meaningful detail that demonstrates how every element of the watch has been carefully considered, allowing the collaboration to emerge naturally rather than through overt branding.

A CALIBRE ENGINEERED FOR LONG-TERM PERFORMANCE

The same philosophy defines the RM64-01 calibre, where every technical solution has been conceived with a clear objective: improving stability, reliability and efficiency.

The Grade 5 titanium baseplate and skeletonised bridges provide an exceptional balance between rigidity and lightness, while the variable-inertia balance allows for highly precise long-term rate adjustment. Completing the movement is a fast-rotating barrel, designed to optimise torque delivery throughout the entire power reserve.

The result is a power reserve of approximately 65 hours, perfectly in keeping with Richard Mille’s philosophy. Rather than pursuing impressive figures for their own sake, the Maison instead focuses on delivering consistent performance and long-term reliability. It is an approach that once again closely mirrors Colnago’s own philosophy, where every innovation is introduced to improve performance before appearance.

AVAILABILITY AND FINAL THOUGHTS

The Richard Mille RM 64-01 Tourbillon Colnago will be produced in a limited edition of just 50 pieces. As is customary for the Maison, pricing has not been officially disclosed, and the watch will be available through Richard Mille boutiques.

Collaborations between brands from different industries have become increasingly common. Few genuinely succeed in transferring the DNA of one company into another. The RM 64-01 Tourbillon Colnago achieves exactly that. Rather than borrowing the image of a bicycle, it embraces the very principles behind its design.

Perhaps that is the greatest achievement of Richard Mille’s latest creation: proving that a collaboration can transcend marketing and become a genuine dialogue between two companies united by the same vision of engineering excellence, innovation and craftsmanship.

Richard Mille RM 64-01 Tourbillon Colnago

The Richard Mille RM 64-01 Tourbillon Colnago does not simply draw inspiration from a bicycle; it interprets the very philosophy behind its design. That is a subtle but significant difference. The most successful collaborations do more than bring two names together. They unite two cultures, two engineering philosophies and two visions of innovation. It is precisely this coherence that makes the new RM 64-01 Tourbillon Colnago one of the most convincing collaborations of recent years.
