Some complications simply add information, while others completely change the way a dial is read. The retrograde datefirmly belongs to the latter category and, on ref. 47245, becomes the element around which the entire watch is built.
Crafted in 18k white gold, the case measures 37 mm and is distinguished by its long, pronounced and slightly flared lugs, giving the watch considerably more presence than its dimensions might suggest. Classical proportions, but with a personality that truly comes to life on the dial.
Across the upper half, the central date hand travels along a wide arc numbered from 1 to 31. At the end of the cycle, rather than completing a full rotation, it rapidly returns to its starting point: it is precisely this backwards motion that gives the retrograde complication its name. At 6 o’clock, a separate subdial indicates the day of the week, completing a calendar display that is mechanically distinctive yet remarkably intuitive to read.
The silvered guilloché dial keeps everything beautifully balanced, combining applied Roman numerals with circular white-gold hour markers. Despite the calendar indications occupying a significant portion of the dial, the overall composition remains clean and perfectly legible: here, the complication does not overwhelm the design, but ultimately defines it.
Inside is the automatic Calibre 1126/1, with 36 jewels and up to 48 hours of power reserve. The movement is based on the Jaeger-LeCoultre Calibre 889 and paired with the R31 module, developed in-house by Vacheron Constantin to control the retrograde date and day-of-the-week indication. It is a particularly interesting combination: a proven automatic base upon which the manufacture builds the complication that gives the watch its distinctive identity.
The movement is visible through the sapphire crystal caseback, secured by four screws. Its oscillating weight features a 21k gold peripheral segment, leaving much of the calibre’s architecture visible and adding another point of interest when the watch is viewed from the back.
The black alligator strap, paired with a Vacheron Constantin white-gold pin buckle, completes a deliberately understated configuration. White gold, a silvered dial and restrained colour contrasts allow the geometry of the retrograde calendar and the proportions of the case to define the watch’s character.
What makes this particular example even more special is its condition. The watch we are offering is NOS “New Old Stock”, never worn and preserved over time in its original condition.
