Fifty years after the birth of the Ingenieur SL Ref. 1832 designed by Gérald Genta, IWC Schaffhausen celebrates one of the most important models in its history with two new limited editions. The result is the IWC Ingenieur Automatic 40 50th Anniversary Ref. IW328910 and the Ingenieur Automatic 35 50th Anniversary Ref. IW324909, both featuring a brushed silver-plated dial inspired by a rare variant of the original 1970s watch and each produced in a limited edition of 1,150 pieces.
The two new Ingenieur models arrive three years after the model returned in 2023, when IWC decisively brought the collection back toward the aesthetic language of the Ref. 1832, reinterpreting its design through contemporary proportions, ergonomics and finishing. What began as the return of a historic name has gradually evolved into a complete family, now spanning different sizes, materials and complications. To fully understand its significance, however, we need to briefly return to the watch that started it all.
FROM 1976 TO THE RETURN OF THE INGENIEUR
The Ingenieur actually predates Gérald Genta by more than two decades. Introduced in 1955, it was conceived as a robust automatic watch also intended for professionals exposed to strong magnetic fields, with a soft-iron inner case designed to protect the movement. Its identity was therefore technical first and foremost. In 1976, however, IWC asked Gérald Genta to reinterpret it, just as a new idea of the stainless-steel luxury sports watch with an integrated bracelet was emerging in Swiss watchmaking. The result was the Ingenieur SL Ref. 1832, a radically different design in which bezel, case and bracelet became part of a single architecture.
It was precisely this watch that IWC returned to in 2023 with the Ingenieur Automatic 40. The bezel secured to the case middle by five functional screws, the grid-pattern dial and the integrated bracelet connected to the case through its centre link revived some of the most recognisable codes of the Ref. 1832, while adapting them to a contemporary watch. The project was also developed in consultation with Evelyne and Alexia Genta, the designer’s wife and daughter, who were involved in the stages leading to the Ingenieur’s revival. IWC INGENIEUR 50TH ANNIVERSARY: THE RETURN OF THE SILVER-PLATED DIAL
To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Ref. 1832, IWC chose not simply to reproduce Genta’s watch. Instead, the two new Ingenieur 50th Anniversary models start from the architecture of the contemporary collection while bringing back a number of very specific details from the archives. The most obvious is the brushed silver-plated dial, inspired by a rare variant of the 1970s Ingenieur SL. The surface is paired with rhodium-plated hands and applied metal markers filled with Super-LumiNova, while one of the most discreet references to the anniversary appears in the Ingenieur logo itself: the characteristic lightning bolt that normally sits beneath the name has been replaced by the number “50”.
Both feature a stainless-steel case and integrated bracelet, finished with an alternation of brushed and polished surfaces that emphasises the architecture of the design. The distinctive bezel is secured to the case middle by five functional screws and features a brushed surface with polished edges. Beyond their shared aesthetic language, however, the two Anniversary models are not simply the same watch offered in two different sizes: their proportions, bracelet finishing, movements and even the way each interprets the Ingenieur’s technical heritage are different.
IWC INGENIEUR AUTOMATIC 40 50TH ANNIVERSARY – REF. IW328910
The Ingenieur Automatic 40 50th Anniversary Ref. IW328910 retains the contemporary Ingenieur’s 40 mm stainless-steel case, with a thickness of 10.7 mm and water resistance to 10 bar. The integrated bracelet is entirely brushed, while inside is the IWC-manufactured 32111 calibre, a 4 Hz automatic movement equipped with a double-pawl winding system and capable of delivering a 120-hour power reserve. Yet one of the most interesting links to the model’s history is hidden from view: just like the original Ingenieur SL, a soft-iron inner case protects the movement from the effects of magnetic fields. This is therefore not simply about reviving Genta’s aesthetics, but also part of the technical identity on which the Ingenieur had been built from the very beginning.
The Ref. IW328910 will be produced in 1,150 pieces and is priced at €14,900. The way IWC chose to mark the anniversary is also interesting: rather than relying on conspicuous engravings or commemorative elements, it opted for the silver-plated dial, the small “50” in the logo and the return of antimagnetic protection, letting references to the model’s history define this Anniversary edition.
IWC INGENIEUR AUTOMATIC 35 50TH ANNIVERSARY – REF. IW324909
The Ingenieur Automatic 35 50th Anniversary Ref. IW324909 brings the same design language to a 35.1 mm case, with a thickness of 9.4 mm and water resistance to 10 bar. The differences, however, go beyond dimensions. The bracelet features polished centre links, creating a stronger contrast with the brushed surfaces, while the back is fitted with a transparent sapphire crystal caseback that reveals the IWC 47110 automatic calibre. The movement runs at 4 Hz, offers a 42-hour power reserve and is finished with Côtes de Genève and perlage, complemented by a gold-plated oscillating weight.
This Ingenieur will also be produced in 1,150 pieces, priced at €13,000. The 35 mm therefore takes on a slightly different character from the 40: it retains the same aesthetic origins and anniversary dial, but favours more compact proportions and the possibility of viewing the movement through the caseback, consequently foregoing the soft-iron antimagnetic construction found in the larger model.
598 PIECES: AN ICON AHEAD OF ITS TIME
The history of the Ingenieur SL makes these two Anniversary editions particularly interesting. When Genta presented his design in 1976, IWC continued to position the Ingenieur primarily as a watch for engineers and professionals. It was a positioning consistent with the collection’s origins, but far less so with what the designer had just created. While other integrated-bracelet watches were beginning to be positioned as a new form of stainless-steel luxury sports watch, the Ingenieur SL remained tied to an audience for whom those shapes may have appeared excessively bold. Only 598 pieces of the Ref. 1832 were produced and sold.
It would take decades for collectors to look again at that watch and reassess its design. What in the 1970s seemed too far removed from the expectations of the public gradually became one of the very elements that define its appeal today.
Since the debut of the Ingenieur Automatic 40 in 2023, IWC has progressively transformed the model’s return into a fully fledged collection. New sizes, colours and materials have followed, along with complications such as the perpetual calendar and tourbillon. The family now includes interpretations in stainless steel, titanium, 18-carat 5N gold, and black and coloured ceramic, demonstrating just how central the language born around the Ref. 1832 has once again become to the Ingenieur’s contemporary identity.
“FORM UND TECHNIK.”: THE INGENIEUR IN THE HEART OF MILAN
Fifty years after the birth of the Ingenieur SL, the celebrations extend beyond the two new Anniversary editions. From 22 to 28 September, during Milan Fashion Week, IWC brings “Form und Technik” to Via Montenapoleone, an immersive and interactive installation exploring the relationship between engineering, watchmaking, design and creativity.
At the heart of the project is a Glass Box with a technical, minimalist aesthetic, inside which the 1976 Ingenieur SL Ref. 1832 is displayed in a deconstructed form, revealing its different layers, offering a perspective on its architecture and mechanical construction. Over the seven days, the space will also host talks, demonstrations and performances featuring figures including Christian Knoop, Creative Director of IWC Schaffhausen, Giuseppe Santoni, Ernst Knam and Marta Bassino, creating a dialogue between watchmaking, design, craftsmanship, food and sport.
The experience continues at the IWC boutique at Via Montenapoleone 21, where the contemporary Ingenieur collection will be displayed alongside a selection of historic pieces from the IWC Museum in Schaffhausen. It is another way of creating a dialogue between what Genta designed in 1976 and what the Ingenieur represents today. GÉRALD GENTA WAS RIGHT
IWC could have celebrated this anniversary simply by reproducing the 1976 Ingenieur SL. Instead, it chose a subtler path: starting from the contemporary Ingenieur, introduced in 2023 as a reinterpretation of that very design, and bringing back a number of highly specific elements from its history. The silver-plated dial from a rare variant of the Ref. 1832, the small “50” incorporated into the logo and, on the 40 mm model, the technical continuity represented by the soft-iron antimagnetic protection.
These details take on even greater significance when viewed against what has happened over the past three years. What began in 2023 as the return of the Ingenieur has now evolved into a collection spanning different sizes, materials and complications. The two Ingenieur 50th Anniversary models therefore do not attempt to take the watch back in time; instead, they remind us where it all began again.
In 1976, the Ingenieur SL was probably ahead of its time. Fifty years later, that same idea has returned to the heart of the IWC collection.
