DESCRIPTION
In 1969, Rolex introduced a significant innovation in the history of the Submariner: for the first time, the iconic diving watch featured a date display at 3 o'clock, magnified by the unmistakable Cyclops lens. Thus, the reference 1680 was born, preserving the professional character of its predecessors while introducing a feature that would become one of the collection's defining elements.
Among the most sought-after versions is the legendary “Red Submariner”, nicknamed for the SUBMARINER inscription printed in red on the dial, a distinctive feature of early production models that was later replaced by traditional white lettering. A seemingly minor detail that has become highly prized among collectors, not least for the subtle typographical variations that distinguish the different dial generations.
This 1971 example features a matte black Mark IV “Feet First” dial, distinguished by its 660 ft = 200 m depth rating, with feet indicated before metres. Over time, the hour markers and hands have developed a warm cream-coloured patina, creating a pleasing contrast with the black dial and its signature red lettering. The 40 mm stainless steel Oyster case, graduated rotating bezel and acrylic crystal with Cyclops lens complete the unmistakable appearance of one of the most recognisable Submariners of its era. Powering the watch is the Rolex automatic calibre 1570 with date function, a robust and reliable movement perfectly suited to its professional diving heritage.
This 1971 Rolex Submariner Date 1680 is offered complete with its original box and papers, a particularly desirable feature for a vintage reference that holds an important place in the history of sports watchmaking.
