DESCRIPTION
Introduced in 2004, ref. 116509 marks an important chapter in the history of the Cosmograph Daytona: it was the first reference of the model to combine an 18k white gold case with an Oyster bracelet crafted from the same material. A precious yet deliberately understated configuration, at least until your attention turns to the dial.
It is the so-called “Racing Dial” that gives this example its distinctive personality. The slate-grey dial is punctuated by red accents, with large applied Arabic numerals and a design that reinforces the Daytona’s connection to the world of motor racing. A far more distinctive dial than the more traditional configurations, it has become one of the most recognisable faces of ref. 116509 over the years.
The 40 mm case retains the classic white gold bezel with engraved tachymeter scale, while the 18k white gold Oyster bracelet alternates brushed and polished surfaces and is completed by an Oysterlock safety clasp. This contrast is precisely what makes the 116509 so distinctive: the relatively understated appearance of a white-metal Daytona, combined with the weight and wrist presence of a watch crafted entirely from gold.
Inside is the Calibre 4130, the first self-winding chronograph movement entirely developed and manufactured by Rolex. Designed to reduce the number of components while improving efficiency, reliability and ease of servicing, it features a column wheel, vertical clutch and approximately 72 hours of power reserve. A movement that powered the modern generation of the Daytona for more than two decades, becoming one of its most defining technical features.
In this case, however, the real distinction is not hidden inside the movement. It lies in its condition. The example we are offering is NOS “New Old Stock”, never worn and preserved over time in its original condition. It is also Full Set, complete with its original set.
