Introduced in 2006 to mark the 30th anniversary of the Nautilus, the Patek Philippe Ref. 5712 represents one of the most fascinating and distinctive interpretations of the Geneva manufacture’s iconic sports watch.
Crafted in rose gold and originally paired with a brown alligator strap, the Ref. 5712R-001 stands out for the characteristic asymmetrical arrangement of its displays. The grey-to-black gradient dial, decorated with the collection’s signature horizontal grooves, features the power reserve between 10 and 11 o’clock, the small seconds between 4 and 5 o’clock and, at 7 o’clock, a pointer date combined with the moon-phase display.
This unusual and instantly recognisable layout is completed by applied rose gold hour markers and matching hands with luminescent coating. The rose gold case measures 40 mm in diameter and just 8.52 mm in thickness, remarkably slender proportions considering the range of functions it accommodates, and is water-resistant to 60 metres. At its heart is the self-winding manufacture calibre 240, distinguished by its off-centre 22-carat gold micro-rotor and offering up to 48 hours of power reserve. The sapphire crystal caseback provides a clear view of the movement’s architecture and finishing.
The example offered here dates from 2010 and is complete with its original box and Certificate of Origin. The original alligator strap has been replaced with a brown Rubber B rubber strap, while retaining the original Patek Philippe rose gold folding clasp. This configuration makes the watch more versatile and enhances its sporting character, while complementing the warm tones of the rose gold case.
