The\u00a0Vacheron Constantin Malte Chronographe ref. 47120\u00a0reflects a very different approach to the chronograph from what we see today: generous proportions, classical construction and a mechanical architecture designed to be seen.<\/p>\n

In this configuration, the\u00a041.5 mm case in 18k pink gold\u00a0combines a stepped bezel with the distinctive geometric lugs of the Malte collection. The\u00a0silvered guilloch\u00e9 dial\u00a0is built on multiple levels, with applied pink gold Arabic numerals and hour markers, small seconds at 9 o\u2019clock and a 30-minute counter at 3 o\u2019clock. Around the perimeter are\u00a0telemetric and tachymeter scales, while the blued chronograph hands contrast with the warm tones of the gold and add depth to an otherwise distinctly classical composition.<\/p>\n

But it is when the watch is turned over that ref. 47120 reveals perhaps its most fascinating side. Through the\u00a0sapphire crystal caseback, secured by six screws, the\u00a0Calibre 1141\u00a0is fully visible: a hand-wound mechanical chronograph movement with\u00a021 jewels.<\/p>\n

It belongs to a deeply traditional school of chronograph construction, one in which the mechanics are not meant to be hidden: levers, bridges, wheels and chronograph components become part of the watch\u2019s aesthetic in their own right. The\u00a0Calibre 1141\u00a0features a\u00a0column-wheel construction, and through the caseback reveals an architecture that is one of the main reasons behind the appeal of this reference. Decorated surfaces, finely finished bridges and the exposed chronograph mechanism make the movement something to admire, rather than simply the engine of the watch.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0brown alligator strap, paired with a\u00a0Vacheron Constantin 18k pink gold pin buckle, completes a configuration that is elegant yet far from anonymous. Pink gold, a silvered dial, blued details and a hand-wound movement visible through the caseback come together to express an approach to the chronograph that feels very different from what we see today.<\/p>\n
