When Rolex introduced the Ref. 16520 in 1988, it marked a turning point in the history of the Cosmograph Daytona. For the first time, Rolex\u2019s chronograph was powered by a self-winding movement, ushering in a new generation that would become one of the most highly regarded among collectors.<\/p>\n

Among the numerous variations produced over the years, black-dial examples bearing W serial numbers are particularly sought after today for the distinctive colour change of their subdial rings, which can gradually develop different shades of brown. In the case of the watch offered here, a W3 serial example from 1995, the rings have developed a warm hazelnut tone, hence its Italian nickname, \u201cNocciolino\u201d.<\/p>\n

This natural transformation creates an elegant contrast with the glossy black dial and makes each watch unique. Examples produced around the mid-1990s are considered among the most interesting for this phenomenon, linked to the oxidation of the protective Zapon coating applied to the subdial rings. The Ref. 16520 features a 40 mm stainless steel Oyster case, water-resistant to 100 metres, paired with an Oyster bracelet and the characteristic stainless steel tachymeter bezel.<\/p>\n

At its heart is the self-winding calibre 4030, developed from the Zenith El Primero 400 and extensively modified by Rolex. Among the most significant changes, its frequency was reduced from 36,000 to 28,800 vibrations per hour to improve reliability and extend the power reserve to approximately 52 hours.<\/p>\n
