The Rolex Cosmograph Daytona “Patrizzi”<\/span><\/span> is a rare variant of Ref. 16520 produced between 1994 and 1995. It has become legendary among enthusiasts and collectors due to a manufacturing defect that, over time, has significantly increased its appeal and rarity. The nickname \u201cPatrizzi\u201d comes from Osvaldo Patrizzi, one of the world\u2019s leading experts in watchmaking – and Rolex in particular – and the founder of the auction house Antiquorum, who was the first to identify this defect. As a result of this anomaly, the chronograph sub-dial rings, originally white, gradually turn brown or even black over time.<\/p>\n

This distinctive discoloration is caused by the use of a specific protective lacquer applied to the rings, known as Zapon. However, this coating does not adequately protect the sub-dials from oxidation caused by humidity and UV exposure, leading to a progressive change in color. Rolex quickly corrected the issue, but not before a number of Ref. 16520 examples had entered the market. Today, these watches are highly sought after, particularly because the degree of patina varies from light brown to almost completely black, making each piece effectively unique. Moreover, the color change does not stabilize and continues to evolve as the watch ages.<\/p>\n

The example offered here dates to 1995 and features the classic 40 mm stainless-steel case paired with an Oyster bracelet, both in excellent condition. Inside beats the automatic calibre 4030, based on Zenith\u2019s El Primero calibre 400, which Rolex extensively reworked with over 200 modifications\u2014both aesthetic and functional\u2014including a reduction in the balance frequency from 36,000 to 28,800 vibrations per hour, representing approximately 50% of the movement\u2019s components. A 1995 example, this <\/span>Rolex Cosmograph Daytona “Patrizzi”<\/span><\/span> is a rare variant of Ref. 16520 produced between 1994 and 1995, characterized by the progressive discoloration of the chronograph sub-dial rings from white to brown and, in some cases, to black. This phenomenon is caused by the use of a specific protective lacquer applied to the rings, which does not adequately shield the sub-dials from oxidation resulting from humidity and UV exposure, leading to the gradual change in color.
