There are names in watchmaking that are more than a simple exercise in style.\u00a0Marine<\/strong>, for\u00a0Breguet<\/strong>, is one of them. Its connection with navigation dates directly back to\u00a0Abraham-Louis Breguet<\/strong>\u00a0and spans more than two centuries of history, all the way to the brand\u2019s current sports watches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2026, the collection is renewed with\u00a0six new versions<\/strong>\u00a0of the\u00a0Breguet Marine 5517<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Marine Chronographe 5527<\/strong>, offered in\u00a018K white gold<\/strong>,\u00a018K rose gold<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0titanium<\/strong>. Rather than changing the architecture of the watches, Breguet has chosen to focus on their aesthetic identity:\u00a0\u201cQuai de l\u2019Horloge\u201d guilloch\u00e9 dials<\/strong>,\u00a0Breguet numerals<\/strong>\u00a0and a different arrangement of the indications give two familiar references a new look without altering their fundamental character.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

FROM 1815 TO TODAY\u2019S BREGUET MARINE<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

To understand why the sea occupies such an important place in Breguet\u2019s history, we need to go back to the beginning of the 19th century. In\u00a01814<\/strong>,\u00a0Abraham-Louis Breguet<\/strong>\u00a0was admitted to the\u00a0Bureau des Longitudes<\/strong>, and the following year Louis XVIII appointed him\u00a0Watchmaker to the French Royal Navy<\/strong>, recognising his pursuit of precision and reliability, qualities that found one of their most important applications in chronometers designed for navigation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some of these instruments accompanied major expeditions:\u00a0No. 3502<\/strong>\u00a0travelled with Louis Le Goarant de Tromelin on his explorations of the Pacific, while\u00a0No. 3588<\/strong>\u00a0took part in Hyacinthe de Bougainville\u2019s voyage around the world between\u00a01824 and 1826<\/strong>. In\u00a01840<\/strong>, a Breguet instrument also reached Antarctica alongside Jules Dumont d\u2019Urville.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\u00a0Breguet Marine<\/strong>\u00a0collection is rooted in this heritage and translates it into a family of contemporary timepieces in which robustness and performance coexist with elements immediately recognisable as part of the brand\u2019s identity. The new\u00a05517 and 5527<\/strong>\u00a0continue along this path without overturning what was already there. Instead, the evolution takes place on the dial and, in particular, through a decoration that connects two seemingly distant places:\u00a0Paris and the sea<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

THE \u201cQUAI DE L\u2019HORLOGE\u201d GUILLOCH\u00c9 AND BREGUET CODES<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The\u00a0\u201cQuai de l\u2019Horloge\u201d guilloch\u00e9<\/strong>, introduced to mark Breguet\u2019s\u00a0250th anniversary<\/strong>, takes its name from the historic address on the\u00a0\u00cele de la Cit\u00e9<\/strong>\u00a0in Paris, where\u00a0Abraham-Louis Breguet<\/strong>\u00a0established his workshop and where his marine chronometers were also produced. The design draws inspiration from the contours of the\u00a0\u00cele de la Cit\u00e9<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0\u00cele Saint-Louis<\/strong>, transforming their geography into a pattern that also evokes the movement of waves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And this is probably where the project gains greater depth. Breguet does not simply apply a new decoration to the Marine; it brings onto the dial the physical place where part of its history took shape.\u00a0Paris, the Quai de l\u2019Horloge and navigation<\/strong>\u00a0thus overlap within the same motif,\u00a0hand-guilloch\u00e9 on a gold base<\/strong>, then treated to create the different shades and covered with a layer of lacquer that gives the surface greater depth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The guilloch\u00e9 then enters into dialogue with an aesthetic vocabulary that Breguet has built over more than two centuries: from the\u00a0\u201capple\u201d hands<\/strong>\u00a0to the characteristic\u00a0fluted middle case<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Breguet numerals<\/strong>. Elements deeply rooted in the brand\u2019s history, which we explored in our feature dedicated to\u00a0Breguet\u2019s aesthetic codes<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

BREGUET MARINE 5517: THE THREE-HAND MODEL IS RENEWED<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The\u00a0Breguet Marine 5517<\/strong>\u00a0remains the most essential interpretation of the family, with hours, minutes, central seconds and date, but the most evident differences from the previous generation emerge when looking at the dial. The date leaves its position at 3 o\u2019clock and moves to\u00a06 o\u2019clock<\/strong>, bringing the indication back onto the vertical axis, while Roman numerals give way to the characteristic\u00a0Breguet Arabic numerals<\/strong>. At 12 o\u2019clock, a\u00a0gold Breguet appliqu\u00e9<\/strong>\u00a0appears, accompanied by the traditional\u00a0\u201capple\u201d hands<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\u00a040 mm case<\/strong>, measuring\u00a011.5 mm thick<\/strong>\u00a0and water-resistant to\u00a0100 metres<\/strong>, retains the characteristic fluted middle case and is offered in\u00a018K white gold<\/strong>,\u00a018K rose gold<\/strong>\u00a0or\u00a0titanium<\/strong>. The three configurations are distinguished above all by their colours:\u00a0ice blue<\/strong>\u00a0for white gold,\u00a0black<\/strong>\u00a0for rose gold and\u00a0blue gradient<\/strong>\u00a0for\u00a0titanium<\/strong>. Three quite different interpretations, capable of shifting the character of the 5517 from the brighter elegance of white gold to the stronger presence of rose gold with a\u00a0black<\/strong>\u00a0dial, and finally to the sportier character of\u00a0titanium<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The connection with navigation continues in the less immediate details. The tip of the seconds hand forms a\u00a0\u201cB\u201d inspired by the \u201cBravo\u201d maritime flag<\/strong>, the crown guard evokes the movement of waves and, through the sapphire crystal caseback, the\u00a0gold oscillating weight<\/strong>\u00a0can be seen, its lines recalling those of a\u00a0rudder<\/strong>. These are discreet references, some already part of the Marine family, that keep the connection with its origins alive without turning it into a simple decorative exercise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Powering the 5517 is the\u00a0self-winding Breguet calibre 777A<\/strong>, numbered and signed, with a frequency of\u00a04 Hz<\/strong>, a\u00a0silicon balance spring<\/strong>\u00a0and a\u00a055-hour power reserve<\/strong>. Each version is available on a rubber strap, decorated with a motif echoing the Quai de l\u2019Horloge pattern on the dial, or on a bracelet matching the case material.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\u00a0titanium Marine 5517<\/strong>\u00a0is priced at\u00a0\u20ac 23,800 on rubber<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0\u20ac 27,000 on bracelet<\/strong>, while the\u00a0white-gold and rose-gold<\/strong> versions are priced at\u00a0\u20ac 44,000 on rubber<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0\u20ac72,300 on bracelet<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

BREGUET MARINE CHRONOGRAPHE 5527: A NEW BALANCE<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

While on the 5517 the changes mainly involve a different arrangement of the elements, on the\u00a0Marine Chronographe 5527<\/strong> Breguet makes a more decisive choice:\u00a0subtraction<\/strong>. The previous three-counter configuration gives way to a\u00a0bi-compax layout<\/strong>, eliminating the chronograph hour counter. The minute counter remains at 3 o\u2019clock and the small seconds at 9 o\u2019clock, while the date leaves its previous position between 4 and 5 o\u2019clock and moves to\u00a06 o\u2019clock<\/strong>. Here too, Roman numerals give way to Breguet numerals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is an apparently simple change, but one that significantly alters the perception of the 5527. Instead of adding a function or pursuing greater complexity, Breguet removes an indication to give more space to the guilloch\u00e9 work and make the composition cleaner. The large central hand continues to measure the chronograph seconds, while the two counters create a clearer symmetry around the axis formed by the signature at 12 o\u2019clock and the date at 6 o\u2019clock. This is where that\u00a0new balance<\/strong>\u00a0comes from and, more than any other change, it is what distinguishes this evolution from its predecessor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The case measures\u00a042.3 mm<\/strong>\u00a0in diameter and\u00a013.9 mm thick<\/strong>, is water-resistant to\u00a0100 metres<\/strong>\u00a0and, as on the 5517, is available in white gold, rose gold and titanium. The colour palette changes, however: the two gold versions feature a\u00a0blue gradient dial<\/strong>, while the titanium version opts for a\u00a0grey gradient<\/strong>, emphasising its more technical character.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The nautical references return on the large central chronograph hand, tipped with the \u201cB\u201d of the Bravo maritime flag, on the wave-inspired crown guard and on the gold oscillating weight visible through the caseback, designed to evoke the lines of a rudder. Behind the dial is the\u00a0self-winding Breguet calibre 582QA<\/strong>, equipped with a\u00a0flyback chronograph<\/strong>, a frequency of\u00a04 Hz<\/strong>, a\u00a0silicon balance spring and inverted silicon anchor<\/strong>, and a\u00a048-hour power reserve<\/strong>. The chronograph can also be configured on a rubber strap with the Quai de l\u2019Horloge motif or on a bracelet in the same material as the case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\u00a0titanium Marine Chronographe 5527<\/strong>\u00a0is priced at\u00a0\u20ac 29,800 on rubber<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0\u20ac 33,000 on bracelet<\/strong>, while the\u00a0white-gold and rose-gold<\/strong>\u00a0versions are priced at\u00a0\u20ac 53,600 on rubber<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0\u20ac 84,600 on bracelet<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

CHANGING WITHOUT STARTING FROM SCRATCH<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The new\u00a0Breguet Marine 5517 and Marine Chronographe 5527<\/strong>\u00a0are not the result of a technical revolution or a complete rethink of the collection. The cases and movements remain essentially those we already knew; instead, Breguet has chosen to intervene where a watch builds much of its identity: on the dial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the 5517, the date is repositioned and the graphic language changes; on the 5527, Breguet even goes so far as to remove the hour counter to achieve a more essential composition. Linking the two models are the\u00a0Quai de l\u2019Horloge<\/strong>,\u00a0Breguet numerals<\/strong>\u00a0and those details that have long belonged to the brand\u2019s aesthetic heritage. Not a revolution, then, but rather a process of subtraction and refinement that makes the two Marine models more consistent with Breguet\u2019s identity without erasing their sporting character.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ultimately, for a collection that can trace its origins back to Abraham-Louis Breguet\u2019s appointment as\u00a0Watchmaker to the French Royal Navy in 1815<\/strong>, looking to its own history does not necessarily mean looking backwards. It can simply mean\u00a0knowing where to begin again<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
