There are watches designed to make reading the time as immediate as possible. And then there are others that deliberately take a different path, transforming an everyday gesture into something that demands attention. The new\u00a0De Bethune DB25 Digitale<\/strong>, with\u00a0jumping hours, minutes displayed on a rotating disc and a spherical moon-phase indication<\/strong>, undoubtedly belongs to the latter category.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To tell its story, the Manufacture borrows a line from\u00a0Moon River<\/em>, the celebrated song by\u00a0Henry Mancini and Johnny Mercer<\/strong>:\u00a0\u201cThere is such a lot of world to see.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0A reference that perfectly anticipates the spirit of a watch in which the hours, minutes and moon phases are not simply displayed, but arranged across different levels and entrusted to three distinct forms of indication.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"De<\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

With the\u00a0DB25 Digitale<\/strong>, De Bethune returns to a concept that has accompanied the Manufacture since its early years. The new model follows in the footsteps of the\u00a0DBD<\/strong>, one of the brand\u2019s emblematic creations, and represents a new evolution of a language that has taken different forms over time. The principle of digital time display is now reinterpreted within the architecture of the DB25 collection and through De Bethune\u2019s contemporary aesthetic language.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Traditional hands and hour markers therefore disappear: the\u00a0jumping hours<\/strong>\u00a0are displayed digitally through an aperture at 12 o\u2019clock, the\u00a0minutes<\/strong>\u00a0are indicated in analogue form by a rotating disc in the lower section of the dial, while De Bethune\u2019s unmistakable\u00a0spherical moon<\/strong>\u00a0occupies the centre. Three different ways of representing time coexist within a single architecture.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

THE DIAL OF THE DE BETHUNE DB25 DIGITALE: A NIGHT-TIME LANDSCAPE COMPOSED OF 82 ELEMENTS<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Even before considering its mechanics, however, the\u00a0DB25 Digitale<\/strong>\u00a0immediately draws attention to its dial. De Bethune imagines it as a night-time scene, where the different finishes and shades of blue evoke moonlight reflecting across the surface of a river.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No fewer than\u00a082 elements<\/strong>\u00a0make up this architecture, arranged through concentric surfaces, different materials and contrasting finishes. The protagonist is\u00a0blued titanium<\/strong>, on which De Bethune applies its\u00a0random guilloch\u00e9<\/em>, a technique introduced in 2023 that creates an irregular, undulating pattern whose appearance changes dramatically according to the way light strikes its surface.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This contemporary language is contrasted with an element rooted in traditional watch decoration. The silvered minute sector is hand-finished with a\u00a0barleycorn guilloch\u00e9 motif<\/strong>, while the fixed chapter ring and the surround of the spherical moon are crafted from\u00a0polished and blued Grade 5 titanium<\/strong>, set with grey-gold stars.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is precisely the contrast between these different techniques that defines much of the watch\u2019s personality: polished surfaces, traditional guilloch\u00e9 and heat-treated titanium react differently to light, lending depth to a dial that seems to change continuously.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

JUMPING HOURS, MINUTES ON A DISC AND A SPHERICAL MOON<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The architecture of the dial is built above all around its unusual display system. At 12 o\u2019clock is the\u00a0jumping-hour aperture<\/strong>, while the minutes are read in the lower section through an analogue indication displayed on a\u00a0rotating disc<\/strong>. At the centre, becoming the visual focal point of the entire composition, sits the spherical moon.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The spherical moon is composed of\u00a0two polished hemispheres<\/strong>, one in palladium and the other in flame-blued steel, and is inclined at\u00a060\u00b0<\/strong>. As it rotates, it reproduces the different phases of the Moon with an accuracy such that it accumulates a deviation of just\u00a0one lunar day every 1,112 years<\/strong>. Patented by De Bethune in 2004, the system has over the years become one of the Manufacture\u2019s most recognisable technical and aesthetic signatures.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Behind the apparent serenity of the dial lies an equally sophisticated construction. A system based on\u00a0micro ball bearings<\/strong>drives both the jumping-hour mechanism and the rotating minute disc, allowing the mechanical complexity to remain almost entirely concealed beneath the dial\u2019s composition.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The result is a way of reading time that abandons the conventional arrangement of hands and markers in favour of three different languages:\u00a0digital for the hours, analogue for the minutes and three-dimensional for the moon phases<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

THE DB2144V3 CALIBRE<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Powering the\u00a0De Bethune DB25 Digitale<\/strong>\u00a0is the\u00a0DB2144V3<\/strong>, a manually wound in-house mechanical movement now in its third generation. Measuring\u00a030 mm in diameter<\/strong>, it comprises\u00a0416 components and 32 jewels<\/strong>, operates at a frequency of\u00a028,800 vibrations per hour (4 Hz)<\/strong>\u00a0and delivers an impressive\u00a0five-day power reserve<\/strong>, provided by the self-regulating twin barrel developed by De Bethune in 2004.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The movement incorporates numerous innovations developed by the Manufacture over the years. The balance wheel is made from\u00a0titanium with grey-gold inserts<\/strong>, a solution patented in 2004 and subsequently optimised in relation to temperature variations and aerodynamic efficiency. It is joined by the\u00a0De Bethune balance spring with flat terminal curve<\/strong>, a\u00a0silicon escape wheel<\/strong>\u00a0and the distinctive blued\u00a0triple pare-chute shock-absorbing system<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many of the solutions employed by the\u00a0DB2144V3<\/strong>\u00a0therefore trace their origins back to the early 2000s. Rather than radically reinventing its mechanical architecture, with this third generation De Bethune continues to develop and refine a calibre that already incorporated some of the technical solutions that would go on to become hallmarks of the Manufacture. More than two decades later, its construction retains a level of technical sophistication that remains thoroughly contemporary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

FROM THE DIAL TO THE MOVEMENT<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The continuity between aesthetics and mechanics becomes evident when the watch is turned over. The sapphire crystal case-back reveals a\u00a0concave titanium mainplate<\/strong>, while the titanium barrel bridge is finished with hand-executed bevelling and polishing. For the first time, the\u00a0random guilloch\u00e9<\/em>\u00a0motif used on the dial also appears on the\u00a0central blued-titanium insert of the deltoid bridge<\/strong>, creating an immediate visual connection between the front and back of the watch.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is an important detail because it perfectly illustrates De Bethune\u2019s approach to decoration: not as something independent from the mechanics, but as an integral part of the watch\u2019s architecture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

42 MM MIRROR-POLISHED GRADE 5 TITANIUM CASE<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

All this complexity is housed within the distinctive architecture of the\u00a0DB25 collection<\/strong>, here crafted from\u00a0mirror-polished Grade 5 titanium<\/strong>. The case measures\u00a042 mm in diameter and 11.9 mm thick<\/strong>, with a particularly discreet bezel that leaves most of the visual space to the dial. The integrated, openworked and rounded lugs feature De Bethune\u2019s characteristic\u00a0bullet<\/em>\u00a0aesthetic and follow the sloping geometry of the case towards the wrist.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The watch is completed by an extra-supple dark blue alligator strap, alligator-lined and hand-stitched, paired with a\u00a0polished Grade 5 titanium pin buckle<\/strong>.\u00a0The\u00a0De Bethune DB25 Digitale Ref. DB25VD<\/strong>\u00a0is not a limited edition and is priced at\u00a0CHF 106,000, excluding taxes<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

ANOTHER WAY OF READING TIME<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The\u00a0DB25 Digitale<\/strong>\u00a0neatly encapsulates one of the most fascinating aspects of\u00a0Denis Flageollet<\/strong>\u00a0and De Bethune\u2019s work: the ability to employ extremely sophisticated technical solutions without necessarily turning complexity into ostentation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And perhaps this is precisely where the watch finds its identity. The\u00a0jumping hours<\/strong>,\u00a0minutes on a rotating disc<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0spherical moon<\/strong>\u00a0are not three independent elements, but parts of a single composition in which mechanics, materials and decoration all contribute to the same result.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is perhaps the most compelling meaning behind the expression chosen by De Bethune to accompany the new\u00a0DB25 Digitale<\/strong>:\u00a0\u201cTime Contemplated.\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0Not simply time to be read, but time to be observed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
