Steve Jobs once said that\u00a0\u2018design is at the core of human creation\u2019<\/strong>. Who knows whether the designers taking part in the international\u00a0Seiko Power Design Project<\/strong>\u00a0have ever shared this view of the Apple founder\u2026 Judging by the watches they have created, probably yes. The project, which originates in\u00a0Tokyo<\/strong>\u00a0and features a different theme defining its title in each edition, returns to\u00a0Italy<\/strong>\u00a0this year for its first European stop with the exhibition\u00a0\u201cPassionately and Obsessively Crafted Watches\u201d<\/strong>. During\u00a0Milan Design Week<\/strong>\u00a0and for a month, from 18 April to 17 May, visitors can view the exhibition at the\u00a0Seiko Boutique<\/strong>\u00a0at Via della Spiga 52 in\u00a0Milan<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As you read on, we\u2019ll tell you what the\u00a0Seiko Power Design Project<\/strong>\u00a0is and how it came about, what it has achieved in recent years, and which creations make up the\u00a02026 exhibition<\/strong>. We\u2019ll also try to explain the role and importance of\u00a0design<\/strong>\u00a0in the Japanese brand\u2019s approach to\u00a0watchmaking<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

WHAT IS THE SEIKO POWER DESIGN PROJECT<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The\u00a0Seiko Power Design Project<\/strong>\u00a0is an experimental initiative that originally ran from 2001 to 2009 with the aim of encouraging employees to develop their own ideas, adopting a different approach to their usual work. Initially supervised by product designer\u00a0Naoto Fukasawa<\/strong>, the project gave rise to unique models.\u00a0Seiko<\/strong>\u00a0relaunched it in 2022 and, in its new guise, it is increasingly a platform that inspires the brand\u2019s designers to create unconventional and cutting-edge\u00a0watches<\/strong>that break away from traditional norms. The beauty of the\u00a0Seiko Power Design Project<\/strong>\u00a0lies in the fact that it grants creatives the freedom to explore new possibilities, free from constraints and preconceptions, without, however, betraying the spirit of the brand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Naoto<\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Upon its revival in 2022, the project\u2019s theme was understandably\u00a0\u2018Rebirth\u2019<\/strong>, and it saw the reinterpretation of seven historic\u00a0Seiko models<\/strong>. Subsequent editions in 2024 and 2025 focused on\u00a0\u201cIncredibly Specialised Watches\u201d<\/strong>, and last year,\u00a0Collection 1<\/strong>\u00a0marked the first commercial launch to emerge from the\u00a0Seiko Power Design Project<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Yuya<\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Created by\u00a0Yuya Suganuma<\/strong>,\u00a0Collection 1<\/strong>\u00a0debuted in three colourways, each in a limited edition of 500 pieces. Its design was inspired by the\u00a0Tiss\u00e9<\/strong>, one of\u00a0Seiko\u2019s<\/strong>\u00a0most popular creations from the 1980s, characterised by its delicate case and beaded bracelet, and much loved in\u00a0Japan<\/strong>. An aesthetic designed for a unisex, casual\u00a0watch<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Seiko<\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

In the 2026 edition, the\u00a0Seiko Power Design Project<\/strong>\u00a0continues to evolve. Seven designers \u2013 five men and two women \u2013 have brought their full range of technical expertise and aesthetic sensibility to bear, focusing on the essential elements that define the\u00a0watch\u2019s identity<\/strong>. The result is seven unique pieces, each expressing a distinct personality that goes beyond that of a mere object.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SEIKO POWER DESIGN PROJECT: THE TWO WOMEN BEHIND THE CREATIONS<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In the\u00a0Bar Indices<\/strong>\u00a0watch,\u00a0Miho Wada<\/strong>\u00a0adorns the dial with three-dimensional bars, sculpted and polished like small ingots, which reflect light at every angle and are conceived as an essential synthesis of numbers. \u2018The polished mirror finish, the sharp edges, and their brilliance exude a lustre typical of metal, lending the watch a mysterious power: a magic of light that goes beyond mere brightness.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Seiko<\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

In\u00a0Hands<\/strong>, by\u00a0Yuki Omori<\/strong>, the dial comes to life through a design in which the watch\u2019s hands transform into the arms, legs and tail of a cat: \u201cI believe that the hands of a watch are extraordinary components, capable of expressing a character\u2019s emotions through their movement. In character-themed watches, the role of the hands is significant. Precisely because they act as the element that breathes life into the watch, we are able to form an emotional bond with it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Seiko<\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

SEIKO POWER DESIGN PROJECT: THE FIVE DESIGNERS<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Machining Marks<\/strong>, created by\u00a0Naoya Sukeda<\/strong>, is inspired by the irregularities left by tools on the surface of metal during machining: \u201cOne day, I was struck by a video showing some carpenters working with great dedication. I noticed\u00a0an attention to detail<\/strong>\u00a0similar to that found in\u00a0watchmaking finishing processes<\/strong>. I focused on highlighting the marks of machining as a form of authentic craftsmanship.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yu Ishihara<\/strong>\u00a0created\u00a0Spherical Surface<\/strong>, which highlights the spherical surface as the central element of the design, amplifying its three-dimensionality through light, reflections and\u00a0shadows<\/strong>: \u201cMy passion for this form may stem from that inexplicable, almost mysterious charm that emerges when an ordinary scene is projected onto a spherical surface. I wanted to amplify the emotion evoked by this \u2018mirror par excellence\u2019, so I took the bold step of creating a project entirely dedicated to beauty.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In\u00a0Takuya Matsumoto\u2019s Dial Texture<\/strong>\u00a0model, the dial features a pattern composed of finely embossed decorative motifs, becoming three-dimensional art on a microscopic scale: \u201cIt is precisely the embossing that makes this three-dimensional artistic expression possible in watchmaking. Creating it was like rediscovering the charm of the technique itself.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\u00a0Manual Winding<\/strong>\u00a0model, designed by\u00a0Kento Ito<\/strong>, stems from his passion for\u00a0mechanical movements<\/strong>\u00a0and the relationship that develops between the wearer and the mechanism that drives the watch. \u201cMy aim was to create a design that would allow more people to discover the charm of this mechanism.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finally, in\u00a0Day Indicator<\/strong>, designer and photographer\u00a0Akihiro Hasegawa<\/strong>\u00a0displays the days of the week with elegance and playfulness: \u201cThe part of a watch that evokes the strongest emotions in me is the day indicator. Just like camera lenses, I feel drawn to this ancient technology, almost from another era.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

CONCLUSIONS<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Guided by their attention to every minute detail, the designers who took part in the\u00a0Seiko Power Design Project 2026<\/strong>explored new forms of creative expression through a process of deconstruction and meticulous observation. The exhibition at the\u00a0Seiko Boutique<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 which opened in\u00a0Japan<\/strong>\u00a0on 14 March and, following\u00a0Milan<\/strong>, is set to visit other European cities \u2013 invites visitors to discover unconventional perspectives and explore the creative universe that shaped each model. It is a story of intuition, experimentation and boundless passion, where every\u00a0watch<\/strong>\u00a0represents an authentic and radical exploration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
