This can be achieved through the use of\u00a0high-contrast dials<\/strong>\u00a0or, quite simply, by applying luminescent material<\/strong>\u00a0to the\u00a0hour markers<\/strong>,\u00a0hands<\/strong>\u00a0or the entire\u00a0dial<\/strong>.\u00a0IWC Schaffhausen\u00a0has gone a step further and created a fully\u00a0luminescent watch<\/strong>, from the\u00a0dial<\/strong>\u00a0to the\u00a0case<\/strong>, from the\u00a0strap<\/strong>\u00a0to the\u00a0hour markers<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this article, we will discuss this very watch, the\u00a0Big Pilot\u2019s Watch Perpetual Calendar Ceralume<\/strong>, which has just been unveiled at\u00a0Watches and Wonders Geneva. We will explore the unique features of this\u00a0pilot\u2019s watch<\/strong>, of which IWC has produced\u00a0250 pieces<\/strong>, utilising the\u00a0Ceralume<\/strong>\u00a0luminescent ceramic technology patented by the Schaffhausen-based brand. We will explain what this\u00a0ceramic<\/strong>\u00a0consists of, how it was developed, how it works and what advantages it brings to the watch. Finally, we will highlight the importance of the\u00a0perpetual calendar<\/strong>\u00a0in IWC\u2019s collections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A NEW MATERIAL: CERALUME<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Let\u2019s start by saying that the\u00a0Big Pilot\u2019s Watch Perpetual Calendar Ceralume<\/strong>\u00a0is a\u00a0Big Pilot<\/strong>\u00a0that will appeal to fans of the original versions of this line, as it features a\u00a046.5 mm \u00d7 15.9 mm case<\/strong>. Indeed, it is worth noting that the most recent collections have introduced a more compact size \u2013\u00a043 mm<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 in the time-only<\/strong>\u00a0versions, to meet the demands of a market favouring smaller diameters, whilst still keeping the historic oversized versions in the range. In this case, the\u00a046.5 mm<\/strong> size is necessary because we are dealing with a watch featuring a\u00a0perpetual calendar<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What sets it apart, however, is the unique technology of the material used to create the case, which IWC has named\u00a0Ceralume<\/strong>\u00a0and which, as the name suggests, is a compound combining\u00a0ceramic<\/strong>\u00a0and luminescence<\/strong>. The use of ceramic is no accident. It symbolises the profound expertise in\u00a0materials<\/strong>\u00a0that IWC has acquired over the last forty years, since\u00a01986<\/strong>, when it pioneered the use of this type of hard, scratch-resistant ceramic<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

HOW CERALUME IS CREATED<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Ceralume<\/strong>\u00a0is the result of many years of\u00a0ceramic development<\/strong>\u00a0carried out by the\u00a0XPL engineering division<\/strong>\u00a0at IWC Schaffhausen, with the support of experts from\u00a0RC Tritec<\/strong>. The latter is a cutting-edge Swiss technology company renowned for its\u00a0Super-LumiNova<\/strong>\u00a0luminescent pigments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The process of creating\u00a0Ceralume<\/strong>\u00a0is unique. Whilst conventional\u00a0white ceramic<\/strong>\u00a0is produced by mixing zirconium oxide<\/strong> with other\u00a0metal oxides<\/strong>, luminous ceramic is created from a mixture of\u00a0ceramic powders<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Super-LumiNova pigments<\/strong>. In this process, achieving a\u00a0homogeneous mixture<\/strong>\u00a0is essential; as these raw materials have different particle sizes, this is no simple task.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

IWC\u2019s engineers have therefore designed a\u00a0ball-milling process<\/strong>\u00a0specifically for this material. The ceramic powders<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Super-LumiNova pigments<\/strong>\u00a0are placed in a rotating cylindrical drum \u2013 similar to a washing machine drum<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 partially filled with small balls. As the drum rotates, the balls rise and fall, so that both the\u00a0impact<\/strong>\u00a0and the\u00a0friction<\/strong>\u00a0break down the mixture into a finer, more\u00a0homogeneous powder<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

THE LUMINOSITY OF THE BIG PILOT\u2019S WATCH PERPETUAL CALENDAR CERALUME<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The result, as mentioned above, is a\u00a0case<\/strong>\u00a0that essentially functions like a\u00a0solar cell<\/strong>, designed to emit luminescence<\/strong>. But the effect in the dark is not produced by the case alone; it comes from the entire watch. The whole\u00a0Big Pilot\u2019s Watch Perpetual Calendar Ceralume<\/strong>\u00a0glows in the night, from the\u00a0case<\/strong>\u00a0to the\u00a0dial<\/strong>\u00a0and right down to the\u00a0strap<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whilst in daylight it captivates with a mix of shades of\u00a0white<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0grey<\/strong>\u00a0and a play of\u00a0polished<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0matte surfaces<\/strong>, in the dark, the watch becomes something entirely different. The\u00a0case<\/strong>,\u00a0dial<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0strap<\/strong>\u00a0emit an intense,\u00a0bluish glow<\/strong>, whilst the\u00a0hour markers<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0hands<\/strong>\u00a0appear as darker shadows against the backdrop of a fully\u00a0luminous dial<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This effect is achieved not only thanks to the\u00a0case material<\/strong>, but also because IWC\u2019s engineers have enhanced the\u00a0white dial<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0white rubber strap<\/strong>\u00a0with\u00a0Super-LumiNova pigments<\/strong>. The\u00a0hour markers<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0numerals<\/strong>\u00a0are printed on the dial in a different shade of white, whilst the\u00a0grey hands<\/strong>\u00a0are coated with luminescent material<\/strong>. When worn on the wrist in the dark, the effect is such that the watch seems almost more\u00a0legible<\/strong>\u00a0in the absence of light than in daylight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

IWC SCHAFFHAUSEN AND KURT KLAUS\u2019 PERPETUAL CALENDAR<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Speaking of the dial, that of the\u00a0Big Pilot\u2019s Watch Perpetual Calendar Ceralume<\/strong>\u00a0follows the tradition of IWC\u2019s\u00a0perpetual calendars<\/strong>\u00a0designed for this collection. At\u00a012 o\u2019clock<\/strong>\u00a0is IWC\u2019s\u00a0Double Moon indicator<\/strong>, which shows the Moon as it appears from the northern and southern hemispheres; at\u00a03 o\u2019clock<\/strong>, the power reserve indicator<\/strong>\u00a0and the\u00a0date<\/strong>; at\u00a06 o\u2019clock<\/strong>, the\u00a0month display<\/strong>; at\u00a09 o\u2019clock<\/strong>, the\u00a0day of the week<\/strong>\u00a0and the\u00a0small seconds<\/strong>. The perpetual calendar is completed by the\u00a0four-digit year display<\/strong>\u00a0at\u00a07 o\u2019clock<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When discussing IWC and the\u00a0perpetual calendar<\/strong>, one cannot fail to mention\u00a0Kurt Klaus. During his time as chief watchmaker at the manufactory, he translated the\u00a0Gregorian calendar<\/strong>, with all its irregularities, into a\u00a0mechanical system<\/strong>\u00a0designed to function flawlessly until the year\u00a02499<\/strong>\u00a0without any external intervention. His design was first unveiled in\u00a01985<\/strong>\u00a0in the\u00a0Da Vinci Chronograph Perpetual Calendar<\/strong>\u00a0and is still regarded today as a milestone in\u00a0watchmaking<\/strong>. Ingeniously simple and comprising just\u00a081 components<\/strong>, it propelled the Schaffhausen-based manufacturer to the pinnacle of\u00a0fine watchmaking<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the mid-1970s, Kurt Klaus created his first\u00a0calendar mechanism<\/strong>\u00a0for a pocket watch. At the time, calendars were typically integrated into a movement; he aimed to design a\u00a0separate module<\/strong>\u00a0that could be integrated into various\u00a0base movements<\/strong>\u00a0and operate as simply as possible. The idea was to use the date mechanism<\/strong>\u00a0of the base movement as a\u00a0power source<\/strong>. Thanks to this, a single switching impulse, activated during the night, sets in motion an entire chain of gears, advancing the displays for the\u00a0date<\/strong>, day<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0moon phase<\/strong>. After a month, the\u00a0month indicator<\/strong>\u00a0also advances, followed by the\u00a0decade<\/strong>\u00a0and century indications<\/strong>\u00a0over longer cycles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

HOW KURT KLAUS\u2019 PERPETUAL CALENDAR WORKS<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Every night, the\u00a0base movement<\/strong>\u00a0activates the\u00a0date advance lever<\/strong>; a click advances the\u00a031-tooth date wheel<\/strong>\u00a0by one day. At the same time, another lever advances the\u00a0day-of-the-week wheel<\/strong>\u00a0and the\u00a0moon phase indicator<\/strong>. A single tooth on the date wheel is longer than the others: at the end of each month, it automatically advances the\u00a0month cam<\/strong> – the heart of the mechanical calendar system – by one position.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A series of\u00a0ridges<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0recesses<\/strong>\u00a0runs along its edge, encoding the varying lengths of the\u00a0months<\/strong>. The mechanism<\/strong>\u00a0operates in a similar way to the\u00a0punch cards<\/strong>\u00a0used in the early days of\u00a0computing<\/strong>. To ensure that\u00a0leap years<\/strong>\u00a0are also accounted for, the\u00a0cam<\/strong>\u00a0represents a complete\u00a0four-year cycle<\/strong>. A single recess, corresponding to\u00a029 February<\/strong>, is deeper than all the others. In shorter months, an additional\u00a0notch<\/strong>\u00a0on the\u00a0date-advance lever<\/strong>\u00a0rests on an\u00a0eccentric<\/strong>\u00a0connected to the\u00a0date wheel<\/strong>. At the end of months with fewer than\u00a031 days<\/strong>, it drops off the eccentric and rests on a\u00a0protrusion<\/strong>. This mechanism is indirectly controlled by the\u00a0month cam<\/strong>. In months with fewer than 31 days, an arm connected to the\u00a0date-advance lever<\/strong>\u00a0drops into a recess. The deeper the recess, the greater the\u00a0radius<\/strong>\u00a0over which the lever moves. A longer radius causes the additional\u00a0pawl<\/strong>\u00a0to retract slightly further and drop off the eccentric at the end of the month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Starting from the\u00a0month wheel<\/strong>, Klaus incorporated a\u00a0transmission chain<\/strong>\u00a0leading to a\u00a0year wheel<\/strong>, a decade wheel<\/strong>\u00a0and a\u00a0century slider<\/strong>, the latter moving just\u00a01.2 millimetres every 100 years<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

IWC BIG PILOT\u2019S WATCH PERPETUAL CALENDAR CERALUME: CALIBRE 52616<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The\u00a0calendar module<\/strong>\u00a0of the watch is powered by the\u00a0IWC-manufactured calibre 52616<\/strong>, based on the calibre 52010<\/strong>from the\u00a052000 family<\/strong>, introduced in\u00a02015<\/strong>. This is IWC\u2019s new generation of\u00a0automatic movements<\/strong>\u00a0with a\u00a07-day power reserve<\/strong>. Compared to previous models, the\u00a0Pellaton winding system<\/strong>\u00a0has been reinforced with\u00a0ceramic components<\/strong>, improving durability. Energy is stored in\u00a0two barrels<\/strong>, and the calibre operates at\u00a028,800 vibrations per hour<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\u00a0luminescent details<\/strong>\u00a0extend to the\u00a0case back<\/strong>, where the medallion bearing the inscription\u00a0\u201cProbus Scafusia\u201d<\/strong>, integrated into the\u00a0gold rotor<\/strong>, is made of\u00a0Super-LumiNova<\/strong>\u00a0and glows in the dark like the rest of the timepiece. Decorated with\u00a0perlage<\/strong>\u00a0and fitted with\u00a0blued screws<\/strong>, the\u00a0calibre 52616<\/strong>\u00a0is visible through the\u00a0sapphire crystal case back<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

PRICE AND CONCLUSIONS<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

As mentioned at the start, the\u00a0Big Pilot\u2019s Watch Perpetual Calendar Ceralume<\/strong>\u00a0has been produced by IWC Schaffhausen in a limited run of just\u00a0250 pieces<\/strong>. As befits a limited-edition watch characterised by extensive research into\u00a0advanced materials<\/strong>, its price is substantial:\u00a0\u20ac78,400<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That said, the impression we gained from wearing it at both\u00a0Watches and Wonders Geneva\u00a0and in\u00a0Milan<\/strong>, during an exclusive preview in March, was striking. The\u00a046.5 mm case<\/strong>\u00a0is certainly noticeable on the wrist, although the relatively\u00a0lightweight material<\/strong>\u00a0ensures overall\u00a0comfort<\/strong>. What is truly impressive, however, is the\u00a0luminescence<\/strong>\u00a0provided by\u00a0Ceralume<\/strong>. It stands out for its\u00a0intensity<\/strong>,\u00a0duration<\/strong> and distinctive\u00a0blue-tinged colour<\/strong> – unusual, visually striking and highly effective in terms of\u00a0readability<\/strong>. So much so that, paradoxically, the indications of the\u00a0perpetual calendar<\/strong>\u00a0and the\u00a0time<\/strong>\u00a0appear even easier to read in the dark than in daylight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ultimately, the\u00a0Big Pilot\u2019s Watch Perpetual Calendar Ceralume<\/strong>\u00a0remains both a\u00a0professional timepiece<\/strong>\u00a0and, in a sense, an\u00a0experimental watch<\/strong>. With this model, IWC introduces a new material that will likely find its way into future collections. Seen in this light, the watch becomes even more compelling and, although aimed at a niche of enthusiasts, we believe it will hold a prominent place among the most prestigious creations of the Schaffhausen-based manufacturer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
