Not only aesthetics and high technical qualities but also fun and a story to tell: those are the ingredients that make a timepiece exciting in the eyes of enthusiasts and collectors.\u00a0The Time-Eater<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0certainly embodies these features. From the union of two leading players,\u00a0<\/em>such as\u00a0Louis Erard\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>and the independent watchmaker\u00a0Konstantin Chaykin<\/em><\/strong>, only something unique could come up…<\/p>\n\n\n\n

KONSTANTIN CHAYKIN<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Konstantin Chaykin<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 the independent company founded in 2003 by the homonymous Russian watchmaker and inventor \u2013 certainly needs no introduction. The\u00a0Maison\u00a0<\/em>is specialised in the creation of complicated timepieces for haute horlogerie collectors. Just consider that\u00a0Konstantin Chaykin\u00a0<\/em>wasthe first watchmaker in Russia to make\u00a0tourbillon\u00a0<\/em>timepieces (both clocks and wristwatches) and to design a complication indicating the Orthodox Easter dates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Konstantin<\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Chaykin\u00a0<\/em>is areal record man: he has\u00a094 registered patents,\u00a0<\/strong>more than any other watchmaker in the world. Member of the AHCI (Acad\u00e9mie Horlog\u00e8re des Cr\u00e9ateurs Ind\u00e9pendants<\/em>) since 2010,\u00a0Chaykin\u00a0<\/em>was nominated several times for the prestigious\u00a0Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Gen\u00e8ve\u00a0<\/em>and, in 2018, was awarded the\u00a0Audacity prize\u00a0<\/em>at the GPHG thanks to the\u00a0Clown<\/em><\/strong>, a celebrated timepiece from the\u00a0Wristmons\u00a0<\/em>collection\u00a0<\/strong>(a term created by combining the words\u00a0Wrist\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0monsters<\/em>). His creations, true works of art, also represent an annual\u00a0rendezvous<\/em>\u00a0at the renowned\u00a0Only Watch\u00a0<\/em>auction<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

LOUIS ERARD<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Founded way back in 1929 near the Jura massif,\u00a0Louis Erard\u00a0<\/em>embodies authentic Swiss watchmaking values and tradition:\u00a0affordable haute horlogerie combined with outstanding creativity<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Combining luxury with timeless elegance, the independent brandlaid the foundations for its success by gaining wide recognition thanks to its ability to incorporate\u00a0m\u00e9tiers d’art\u00a0<\/em>decoration techniques\u00a0<\/strong>(guillochage<\/em>, marquetry and enamel). And it is certainly also thanks to the iconic\u00a0R\u00e9gulateurs\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>(from the\u00a0Excellence\u00a0<\/em>Collection) that\u00a0Louis Erard\u00a0<\/em>has built its reputation.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, under the direction of\u00a0Manuel Emch<\/em>, the company is continuing its founder\u2019s work\u00a0by honouring tradition and reinterpreting it in a modern key<\/strong>. This has led to numerous collaborations with creators (seconde\/seconde<\/em>,\u00a0atelier o\u00ef<\/em>,\u00a0Label Noir<\/em>,\u00a0Massena Lab<\/em><\/strong>) and great independent watchmaking names (Alain Silberstein<\/em>,\u00a0Vianney Halter<\/em><\/strong>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

THE TIME-EATER<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The union of\u00a0Konstantin Chaykin\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0Louis Erard\u00a0<\/em>could only result in something unique, fun and, indeed, with a story to tell. This is why\u00a0Louis Erard\u00a0<\/em>\u2018sacrificed\u2019 his\u00a0R\u00e9gulateur\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>to a strange creature, leaving carte blanche to the Russian watchmaker with the sole \u2018constraint\u2019 of respecting the watch architecture characterised by the hour display at noon, and the central minutes and the small seconds at six o’clock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Le<\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Thanks to the skillful creativity of master watchmaker\u00a0Konstantin Chaykin,<\/em>\u00a0theresult is a\u00a0grotesque\u00a0<\/strong>saw-mouthed\u00a0Cyclops<\/strong>, a modern reinterpretation of the well-known mythological figure. To do so,\u00a0Chaykin\u00a0<\/em>got inspiration from the celebrated\u00a0Wristmons\u00a0<\/em>Collection, born in 2017 and steadily growing like a big family of happy villains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The movement (a\u00a0Sellita SW266-1 automatic calibre\u00a0<\/strong>with\u00a038 hours of power reserve<\/strong>) brings this strange creature to life with an amusing role reversal: it is no longer the spectator who looks at the time but the time that stares at the spectator!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following the vertical reading distinctive of the\u00a0R\u00e9gulateur<\/em>,\u00a0the indication of the time is then entrusted to the Cyclops’s eye<\/strong>, which takes up the stylistic features of the first watch made by\u00a0Chaykin\u00a0<\/em>for the\u00a0Wristmons\u00a0<\/em>Collection: the reference, indeed, is to the\u00a0Joker\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>whose eyes (respectively indicating the hours and minutes) were made up of white discs marked with a dot, both pupil and indicator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Le<\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

The figure of the Cyclops this time, however, is not drawn from Greek tradition but comes from the Balkans: it is\u00a0Likho<\/em>, the evil eye of Slavic tales<\/strong>, an amulet against evil spirits.\u00a0Konstantin Chaykin\u00a0<\/em>himself recalls: \u2018Every Halloween I created a new type of monster, i.e. wristwatches with a Halloween theme, such as the pumpkin head watch and the Dracula watch. Looking for ideas for this story, I turned to fairy tales and the one-eyed Likho character.<\/em>\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chaykin\u00a0<\/em>placed the small seconds at six o’clock in a disc with pointed teeth, like an ogre\u2019s mouth. As the watchmaker himself says,\u00a0the inspiration was transversal<\/strong>: \u2018I remembered Francisco Goya and his Saturn devouring one of his sons. And I thought of a Stephen King short story, The Langoliers, time eaters<\/em>.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The monster was only missing its arms… This is why the central minute hand crossing the dial was made (the pattern ofwhich recalls that used in the\u00a0Wristmons\u00a0<\/em>collection for the\u00a0Joker<\/em>). As\u00a0Chaykin\u00a0<\/em>states, \u2018It is up to each person to interpret the meaning\u2019<\/em>: there are those who see an arrow with an arrowhead at one end and feathers at the other, or those who, in a more playful vein, cannot help but see an elongated (middle) finger at one end and horns at the other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Time-Eater\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>isrounded off with a black toadstool strap, green rabbit leather lining, and\u00a0comes in two versions: one with a 39mm case and a purple touch around the dial, and one with a 42mm case for which green is used<\/strong>.\u00a0Limited editions of 178 pieces for each version (price CHF 4000), plus an exclusive\u00a0box set\u00a0<\/em>containing both models (named \u201cLe Diptyque<\/em>\u201d), limited to just 28 pieces (price CHF 7900)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the end, first impressions allow us to say that this is an undeniably fun and imaginative collaboration that will be talked about in the future. Indeed, when pre-orders opened on 25 April at 15:00 CEST, the websiteliterally went downdue to the large number of fans and collectors who simultaneously visited it. Needless to say, within hours of the sales opening, the available watches were immediately\u00a0sold out<\/em>, leaving only the possibility of joining the waiting list. What if this is only the beginning!?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
